Dear [[firstname]]

You are warmly invited the the latest in our eclectic and always thought-provoking series of 'Tuesday Talks' at the club, where we get a small glimpse of the vast array of talent and knowledge we have amongst our members!

On the 18th February, we are delighted to invite back Art Historian Rupert Dickens who entertained us last year with his brillaint talk on the lost art of Album Covers...

This time his focus will be on the artist William Hogarth titled " Hogarth at the hustings: the Election Entertainment series and the birth of political satire"

His summary of the session is as follows:

"The long British tradition of political satire came to the fore last year with the General Election. At the root of that tradition is William Hogarth’s Election Entertainment series of paintings and prints from the 1750s. His ruthless exposure of electoral corruption and hypocrisy set the stage for later generations of political cartoonists and satirists including James Gillray, Spitting Image and Private Eye.

We will look closely at the Election series, explain Hogarth’s many jokes and references and reveal some themes with surprising topical relevance, from voter identification to the politics of immigration."

As per usual, there is no charge to come along for this event, but it would be really helpful if we got a feel for numbers, so please let me know (eg reply to this email) if you plan to come along and how many seats we should save for you - friends and family very welcome.

The Bar will be open from 7pm and Rupert's talk will start from 7.30pm.

A few of you have contacted me already about hosting one of these events, so if there is a topic you would like to present on, please let me know!

We look forward to seeing you on the 18th...

Regards - Ian
