Box League Etiquette and Walkovers

Dear all Box Leaguers

I've had a couple of requests over the last week or so for clarification on Box League 'Rules' around responsiveness and walkovers. Its true that I've tried to avoid firm guidelines so far as it can be a tad fraught and we are all reasonable people, but on balance I think it might be helpful to suggest some ground rules at least - so here they are!

Organising matches

  • Organising games takes time and effort and I think it's reasonable that we all take our fair share of pro-actively contacting people to organise games. So please don't wait for others to contact you!
  • If you are contacted, either on a group or via a DM, then please respond within 1 day even if you can't make the suggested dates . Not responding can be seen as disrespectful and chasing non-responders is very frustrating! It just takes a few seconds to check your diary and answer...
  • If you are DM'd and can't make the suggested date, then rather than simply saying 'No', please suggest at least 2 other dates you can do that are a probable fit for the other person bearing in mind their working hours.

Cancellations

Things can happen - plans change, customers or bosses demand our time and family issues arise, but if you are the one cancelling, then please be aware that your opponent might have already turned down other meetings or activities to hold the date and it might be a little frustrating for them. So, as well as obviously apologising, take on the personal responsibility for rearranging the rematch - eg immediately offer 2 other dates that you can do - don't leave it for them to offer more dates!

Walk-Overs

Firstly it's worth remembering that our focus should be on playing the games rather than getting the points! Walk-overs are very much a last resort and its frankly hard to clearly specify hard and fast rules. Some examples might be:

  • Your opponent cancels a booked match due to injury and won't recover before the end of the period.
  • Your opponent cancels a match twice and doesn't reorganise the match
  • You have given somebody dates 2 or 3 times and had zero repsonse

Really though each situation is always going to be nuanced - you never know the full background. So my only firm guidlines would be..

  1. Please don't post a 3-0 walkover without first agreeing with your opponent that there is no other option available and its the fair thing to do
  2. If in doubt, contact me and I can do my best to adjudicate

Finally - I do not have a monopoly of thought on this issue, so would be grateful for any other ideas!!

Thanks - Ian
